300Mbps Virgin broadband coming up – move to ultrafast ‘as standard’

Wednesday, 22 March, 2017

Virgin broadband today sends a stark warning to the competition by boosting its standard speed from 50Mbps to 100Mbps and offering lightning-quick 300Mbps.

All new customers will have access to the faster bundles from the end of March 2017.

We’ll link direct from here as and when these speedier broadband deals go live.

An unsurprisingly smug Virgin Media spokesman said that the move “reaffirms [our] position as the UK’s ultrafast broadband provider”.

From 30 March 2017 Richard Branson’s firm will ditch their entry-level SuperFibre 50, which promised download speeds of up to 50Mbps at a cost of £32.75 a month.

The cheapest Virgin broadband deal will now be the VIVID 100 solus, which offers download speeds of 100Mbps with upload speeds of 12Mbps for £32.75 a month.

Just a note if you’re reading this on the day it was posted and you’re in the market for Virgin broadband.

There’s only eight days to go until the new packages are available.

The Virgin Media website is still listing the 50Mbps plan it’s going to drop, so don’t get caught out by committing too soon.

The cable broadband firm’s VIVID Gamer was already the fastest consumer package on the market, offering 200Mbps download speeds and upload speeds of 20Mbps.

Virgin broadband is still one of the only UK providers to include upload speeds in its packages. Upload speed is important for online gamers, or anyone who uploads large files to the internet on a regular basis.

VIVID 200 solus offers downloads at 200Mbps and 16Mbps uploads for £37.25 a month, VIVID 200 Gamer moves you up to 200Mbps downloads but with speedier 20Mbps uploads for £42.25 a month.

The quickest mass-availability home broadband deal on the market is now the VIVID 300 solus.

With uploads of 20Mbps and blazing fast 300Mbps downloads it should satisfy even the most demanding user.

We expect Virgin will stick to its current setup where you can add phone calls on top of all Virgin broadband packages for extra £7.75 a month.

Again, we’ll check that for you and add up the real cost of the deal when it goes live.

Virgin’s 4K-ready V6 1TB Tivo box will from the end of March be added as standard to the Mix, Fun and Full House broadband and TV bundles..

Existing customers will be offered upgrades to the V6, if they want it. The standard fee which Virgin are expected to keep is £99.95.

Tom Mockridge, CEO of Virgin Media, said: “By beefing up our bundles we’re leaving our competitors in the rear view mirror, starting where they finish.”

Mr Mockridge added: “Eye-watering speeds, a better box and top-notch TV is a winning combination.

“More and more switchers tell us they are joining Virgin Media for our faster speeds and we understand why – whether it’s 4K Netflix, box sets in multiple rooms or online gaming, the best entertainment requires the best broadband and we’re making sure our customers are covered with these bundles at incredible value.”
